Miryang Sundae Dwaeji-gukbap (Haeundae) | The Top Pork & Rice Soup Joint in Haeundae

Today’s pick: Miryang Sundae Dwaeji-gukbap, located about a 3-minute walk from Exit 5 of Haeundae Station on Busan Metro Line 2.

Storefront and waiting line

This is Haeundae’s most popular Dwaeji-gukbap shop!

At peak hours, you’ll see a line outside the door.

Quick context: “Miryang” is a city about 60 km north of Busan. Dwaeji-gukbap is a specialty of the southeastern region of Korea (Gyeongsang Province) — including Busan and Miryang.

That’s why many Dwaeji-gukbap shops in Busan have “Miryang” in their names.

돼지국밥 (Dwaeji-gukbap): pork & rice soup
순대국밥 (Sundae-gukbap): sundae + pork soup
섞어국밥 (Seokkeo-gukbap): pork + offal soup
내장국밥 (Naejang-gukbap): offal soup
모듬국밥 (Modum-gukbap): pork + sundae + offal soup

The regular Dwaeji-gukbap is 11,500 KRW — a bit pricier than other neighborhoods. The popularity + the prime Haeundae location probably explains it.

Banchan on a plate

The banchan arrives on a single plate.

Probably an efficiency move given how busy the place is, but it feels a tad less ceremonial than usual.

Self-serve banchan corner

Many Korean restaurants have a self-serve banchan corner like this.

Just don’t waste it — only take what you’ll actually eat — and you can have as much as you want!

Rice and Sundae-gukbap

I went with the shop’s namesake — Sundae-gukbap.

Oh!

It arrived properly bubbling hot!

Some super-popular shops, to save time, serve the soup at less-than-boiling temps — a real letdown.

This is a packed, popular spot at a packed hour, so I was a bit worried — but they nailed it!

How does this broth look?

Even just the color says rich and concentrated.

Side by side, the color difference is striking.

Close-up of sundae

And this is sundae — Korean-style blood sausage, stuffed with ground meat, glass noodles, and glutinous rice.

It can be visually intimidating for first-timers, but there’s barely any off-flavor — way more approachable than it looks.

It’s the kind of dish people often write off without trying. Give it a shot!

Sundae-gukbap topped with garlic chives

Quick how-to: first, stir in the red spicy paste (dadaegi) at the bottom of the bowl.

Then adjust the seasoning with salted shrimp (saeu-jeot) or salt, and dump the rice in — that’s the standard way.

Seriously rich broth and excellent sundae — a top-tier Dwaeji-gukbap.
