You step off the plane in Korea, walk into the immigration hall — and see that endless line. “Not again…” Most of us have been there.
On weekends and holiday periods, the wait can easily push past an hour.
The good news: as of late 2025 and early 2026, travelers from 42 countries can register for Korea’s Smart Entry Service (SES) and use the automated immigration gates from then on.
Register once at Incheon Airport, and future immigration takes just a few minutes.
This guide explains everything you need to know about SES — what it is, who’s eligible, where to register, and how to avoid the most common mistakes.
What is SES (Smart Entry Service)?
SES (Smart Entry Service) is an automated immigration system run by the Korean Ministry of Justice. Once registered, you can also use the automated gates on departure — but where travelers feel the benefit most is on arrival, skipping that long immigration line.
You register your passport, fingerprints, and face photo once at Incheon Airport on arrival. From then on, you skip the staffed counter and walk through the automated e-gates instead.
It works the same way as the e-gates used in Japan, Singapore, the UK and many other countries — just on the Korean side.
The three things to remember:
- Registration is available only on arrival at Incheon Airport
- 100% free
- Once registered, it’s valid for 5 years (or until your passport expires, whichever comes first)
Which countries are eligible? (42 countries as of March 2026)
SES has been rolled out in three waves:
From November 2025 (initial 4)
- Germany, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan
From December 2025 (added 14)
- Australia, Finland, France, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Mexico, New Zealand, Netherlands, Portugal, Singapore, Czech Republic, Hungary, United Arab Emirates

SES vs. Smart Pass — they are NOT the same
If you research SES, you’ll also see “ICN Smart Pass” mentioned. The names are similar but they are completely different services. Get this distinction straight first — the rest of the article will make much more sense.

The 3 rules of SES registration
Rule 1: Register only at Incheon, only on arrival
You can register only when you arrive at Incheon Airport.
You cannot register on the way out (departure) — even if you think “let me just do it now.” Always register at the moment you land.
Rule 2: At Terminal 1, only Immigration Halls A and F have SES booths
Incheon T1 has multiple immigration halls (A–F), but SES registration booths are only located in Halls A and F.
If you line up at any other hall, normal immigration finishes before you get the chance to register.
T2 has two immigration halls (A and B). Both have SES registration booths.
Rule 3: Register at Incheon, then use it at any major Korean airport
You cannot do the first-time registration at Gimpo (Seoul), Gimhae (Busan), or Jeju. But once you’ve registered at Incheon, you can use the e-gates at all major Korean airports — Gimpo, Busan Gimhae, Jeju, and more — from your next visit onward.
Registration steps (first time only, 3 steps)
Once you know the rules, the process itself is very simple. No prep required — just bring your passport.
STEP 1｜Don’t queue at the regular “Foreign” lane!
When you reach the immigration floor, do NOT line up at the regular “Foreign” staffed lane. Look for signs that say “SES” or “SES REGISTRATION” and follow them. Staff will often spot you and direct you to the booth.
If you’re not sure, just ask staff:
“SES 등록 어디에서 하나요?” (SES deungnok eodieseo hanayo?) = “Where do I register for SES?”
Or simply in English: “Where can I register for Smart Entry Service?”
STEP 2｜Quick registration at the special booth (3–5 min)
Hand the staff your passport and let them scan your fingerprints and face photo. When done, they put a yellow SES sticker on the back of your passport. That sticker is your proof of registration.
STEP 3｜Walk straight over to the automated gate
You can use the e-gates right away. Scan your passport, face the camera — gate opens, you’re in.

For red-eye and very early flights when T1 is closed, T2 Hall A is the only 24-hour SES registration counter.

Q. Is there a fee?
No. It’s a public service run by the Korean Ministry of Justice — registration and use are completely free.
Q. What’s the age limit?
17 years old and up. Anyone 16 or under has to go through the staffed lane.
Q. What about my kids?
Children under 17 need to use the staffed immigration lane.
Q. Do I still need the e-Arrival Card?
If you’re SES-registered and using the e-gates, the e-Arrival Card is not required.
Q. What if I get a new passport?
You’ll need to re-register. Just do it again the next time you arrive at Incheon.
